Thursday night, March 10, our family celebrated Nate's birthday a night early because we were planning on being at the hospital the next day for my scheduled induction at 39 weeks. We were driving home from dinner when I saw a "716" number calling my phone. I knew it was a hospital prefix, and the first thought that went through my head was, "Great, they're calling to tell me I can't go in for my induction tomorrow." (yes, I tend to be a pessimist sometimes...especially when I'm 9 months pregnant and ornery)
I was mostly correct about the phone call. The nurse said that Friday was going to be a very busy day for inductions, and they didn't think I'd be able to go in until at least the afternoon if not later. BUT, if we could make it up there ASAP, my Dr. had given them the OK to start me that night. There was no hesitation on my part and just over an hour later, after calling Nate's mom to come stay with Navi, we were on our way!
We got to the hospital around 9:45 and by 10:00 we were settled in delivery room 11. (remember that number for later) At my appointment two days earlier, I was dilated to a 3 and was 75% effaced, and my Dr. had stripped my membranes. It obviously it hadn't put me into labor on my own, but I was hoping that it had helped me to progress a little more. However, when the nurse first checked me I was still the exact same. Boo. They started me on the pitosin and also antibiotics because I had tested positive in the Strep B test. (I had also tested positive with Navi) We began talking with our nurse, Emily, and were surprised to hear her birthday was also on March 11! Crazy that three out of the six people in the delivery room were having a birthday on 3/11/11, and we were in room 11. (Too bad I didn't deliver her at 3:11!)
Another funny coincidence that I still have a hard time believing happened when Emily told us we were one of only two other couples in labor and delivery at the time. Nate jokingly asked her if one of the other couples were the Webbs. Dave and Alisha are our good friends, and Alisha was due 2 days later than me. She was pregnant with their first baby and so I always figured that our babies would be born at least a week apart because I knew I was going to be induced at 39, and I just hoped she wouldn't have her baby before me, because come on, that's just rude! :)
As our pregnancies progressed, Alisha was dilating even before I was, and so I was getting very jealous. I finally caught up to her in the last week or so, and then I hadn't talked to her for a few days, so I thought the chances of them being there on the exact same night were slim to none. I even rolled my eyes when Nate asked about the Webbs being one of the other couples. Nate and I were both surprised to see Emily's reaction though. She just gave him a weird look and replied, "Well, legally I can't tell you any names, sorry." She left the room and quickly returned a few minutes later saying, "Nate, come with me. I forgot to show you something in the refreshment room." (P.s. let's not get started on the "refreshment room") Apparently their nurse had told the same thing to Dave, and as soon as Nate walked out into the hall I heard a, "Hey dude!" and I instantly recognized Dave's voice. They talked for awhile and we learned that Alisha had been having contractions for the last few hours and they had arrived at the hospital just minutes before us! Crazy! From then on, Nate and Dave sent texts back and forth and we got the updates on how Alisha was doing. Their son and Trevi's future boyfriend, Parx (cutest name, huh?) was born a couple hours after Trevi. Yes, another 3/11 birthday!
Back to Trevi's story...
Nate and Emily talked me into getting my epidural as soon as I could, and so she called the anesthesiologist. The only reason I was hesitant to get it so early was because I'd heard a lot of stories where epidurals had worn off or not worked, and since my first one with Navi worked great, I didn't want to risk it!
I got my epidural around 11:30, and it went very smoothly. Pretty soon I was numb and having, or better yet, seeing (on the screen), some regular contractions thanks to the pitosin. Dr. Horsley came around 12:00 to break my water and he said I was measuring at a 4 and 80%. Things were moving right along, but when he saw that I had only been on my Strep B antibiotic for a little over an hour (of a 4 hour process), he recommended that they turned off the pit until I had my full dose.
At 1:00 I was still a 4, but I was a little more softened. And finally at 2:00, I had received both does of antibiotics and they were able to turn the pitosin back on. I was still a 4, and was beginning to get very frustrated. 4 was the number I got stuck on for so long when I was waiting to dilate with Navi as well, and I we joked that it must be my unlucky number.
When she checked me again at 3:00 and I was STILL a 4, it was no longer funny. From 3:00 to 4:00 I started to get really nauseous and even threw up a couple times. When the nurse came back at 4:00, she checked me and said, "Wow, take a guess at where you're at!?" I thought she was just being sarcastic and trying to make another joke, so I responded, "Um, a 4?!" To which she replied, "No! You're ready to push! That baby is right there!" We were all completely shocked and I didn't even know what to think. She called my Dr. who lives less than ten minutes away and they began to prepare the room. He got there really soon and they had me all ready to push just in time for him to get his gloves on. After two pushes, Trevi's head was out and the nurse was telling me to get ready for the third. Dr. Horsley stopped me just before I took the third breath, and before I knew it, he was holding Baby Trevi in front of me! It all happened so fast that Nate and I were speechless. When I finally snapped out of the shock, I felt that awesome rush of gratitude and love we had felt when Navi was born. I couldn't believe in that "short" (9 months short) amount of time we had another beautiful baby girl. Nate is once again a proud Daddy and couldn't be more pleased with his amazing birthday present. (don't expect any more children for birthday presents though) :)
Navi wasn't able to come to the hospital to see Trevi because they have very strict rules during the RSV/flu season. We were sad about that, but we made a video of me holding Trevi and talking to Navi and Nate was able to go out and show her. He said she replied to all my questions and said, "Hi Baby Trevi!" She had lots of fun staying with Grandma and thought it was great to have her sleepover.
We had lots of friends and family visit us later that day and by the end of the day I was more than exhausted. At that point I had been up for more than 36 hours and when I was able to get some sleep, it felt marvelous. Nate went home to be with Navi and was back the next morning to pick me up. It felt a little weird leaving the hospital already, but I felt like I was recovering so much faster the second time around and was excited to get home to see Navi and rest at my own house. (Not to mention, the hospital staff doesn't feel bad about hurrying you out)
Since we've been home things have been great. We were super nervous about how Navi would react to her new little sister, but so far she's been really good with Trevi and loves to hold and kiss her. I think the only times she's shown her frustration is at bedtime when she realizes she has to go to sleep and Trevi is still up with us. Hopefully she continues to adjust well. I've been so grateful to have Nate home with us and he's been great to keep Navi entertained during the day when I have wanted to take a nap.
Trevi is already the sweetest little baby. She didn't even cry after she was born and has continued the pattern since. Whenever she's hungry she just whines or whimpers. Here's to hoping that continues as well!
Every now and then I sit back and think, wow, we are a family of four now! I thank my Heavenly Father daily for my two beautiful girls and a wonderful husband. Life is GOOD!
WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY BABY TREVI! WE LOVE YOU!
